Volunteers play a vital role in the operation of the Coastal Discovery Museum. Over 150 people volunteer at the Coastal Discovery Museum on a regular basis, helping in a variety of capacities. Some volunteers are here a few days a week and others help with special events and give us a few hours each year. It’s entirely up to you how much of your time you’d like to give to the Museum’s educational programs, front desk, gardens or facilities. Our volunteers help make the Coastal Discovery Museum a wonderful experience for all of our visitors throughout the year.

Dedicated volunteers enable the Coastal Discovery Museum to provide a variety of natural history and cultural heritage programs for local residents and visitors. Museum educators provide training to prepare docents to lead public education tours and programs.

The museum is home to two lovable marsh tacky horses. Volunteers are needed help move horses between the barn and pasture, feed hay and grain, fill water troughs, and clean stalls and paddocks in the morning and afternoon. For your safety and for the safety of these animals we do ask that volunteers have some prior horse experience.

We ask that the front desk volunteers work a four hour shift and learn how to work a cash register.
