EXPLORE | Coastal Discovery Museum

BE IN THE KNOW

Experience the Lowcountry like Never Before

A mile after you cross the bridge onto Hilton Head Island you will find a hidden treasure, the Coastal Discovery Museum. Many people don't know that the small brown sign pointing off the road will lead them to the majestic 68-acre Honey Horn property and 300 years of history. You can choose to explore on your own or enjoy some of the museum’s educational events, exhibits, talks, and tours.

Starting at the Discovery House, a mile-long nature trail winds past some of the oldest structures on Hilton Head Island. Leading you toward three boardwalks that extend into Jarvis Creek. With our fact-filled interpretive panels as your guides you can learn about our salt marshes and how Gullah Native Islanders relied on this rich ecosystem for food and commerce. Many days you will find Gullah basket makers sewing sweetgrass baskets in front of the museum.

There is so much to see along this trail. You will go by the Hilton Head Island Hall of Fame featuring the historical figures who made Hilton Head Island what it is today. In the summer you will be enchanted by the region’s only native butterfly enclosure and experience the life cycle of local butterflies. In the winter you will fall in love with the Camellia Garden, which has over 130 different varieties in bloom from November to April.

Anything you want to see, learn, do – we have a place and program for you!

There is so much more to explore at the Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island. While you’re here, be sure to use our mobile app to learn more about the property’s history and the surrounding environment.
